For more than 25 years, we've used a basic 4" wood based basket with round
reed weavers for children from ages 8 through 14.
Why the same basket, year after year? Because this basic basket type offers the most success and satisfaction for all ages and skill levels of children in any setting. We've taught this basket in inner cities, country schools, summer camp, Bible school art projects, art clubs, children's museum sessions. public & private schools and more. What do these settings have in common? Usually, there are limited financial means and limited time frames. ALWAYS, there's a desire to introduce basket weaving to the kids with varied skill levels in a way that will be easy and exciting.
The wood base serves as an anchor, visually and manually. In simplest terms,
it means that the student will be able to get started with the horizontal
techniques of weaving across the spokes without visual confusion. In the
child's eyes, the vertical spokes become one with the base and so there isn't
a question about what's top or bottom or sides. This may seem simplistic. But
when you want all of the kids to have a rewarding experience, you want a
basket that works for absolutely everyone. Having a basket that works for
"most" of the kids just isn't right.
For those
older children with obvious basket weaving talent, we show examples of dozens
of ways to experiment with pattern weaves. We also use beads on the spokes or
weavers for variety.
As the teacher flits about the room like a hummingbird, checking weaving
tension and reassuring timid weavers,
this basket assures that everyone goes home happy!
Best regards,
